It’s finally Summer! There are so many things to absolutely love about those “lazy days of summer.” So many, in fact, that I’m not sure I can name one or even two of my favorite things about summer. I love ALL the things! Well, except for mosquitos. . .
Are you finding it hard to balance being healthy and enjoying outings and/or vacation? Luckily for all of us, Summer provides as many healthy options as it does unhealthy. Yes, ice cream is yummy. But have you tried protein ice cream? It’s absolutely a “thing,” AND it’s delicious! Simply blend 1/2 cup of ice, 3 to 4 ounces of almond milk, and 1.5 scoops of your favorite protein to a creamy consistency. Voila – protein ice cream! Summer also brings fresh fruit: blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, watermelon, peaches – and pineapple!
Over the past few weeks, I’ve found that I simply cannot get enough pineapple. Pineapple protein shakes and loaded vitamin teas (NO sugars) have been my go-to on these hot days, going from teaching fitness classes, training clients, and getting my own workouts in. They have provided hydration as well as vitamins, minerals, and clean nutrition! Let’s look at some of the amazing benefits of pineapple.
- Pineapples are absolutely loaded with nutrients!!! Fresh pineapple, while low in calories and fats, are rich in Vitamin C, Manganese and also contains copper, zinc, Vitamins A, K, B6, and thiamine.
- Pineapples are also rich in antioxidants, which assist in fighting disease
- Pineapples are RICH in bromelaine, which aids in digestion. They are also a great source of fiber.
- With the antioxidants and bromelain, pineapples may reduce the risk of cancer
- Nutrients found in pineapples can reduce inflammation and boost immunity! Some studies have shown that bromelain is helpful in reducing the risk of bacterial and viral infections, reducing congestion and chronic allergic sinus issues.
- The properties found in bromelain are not only anti-inflammatory, but are also analgesic. These can reduce inflammation associated with arthritis!
- Nutrients in pineapple can improve recovery after intense workouts and even aid in post surgery recovery.
- In addition to being delicious, pineapples are so easy to implement into your diet. There is always fresh pineapple. Other options are teas, smoothies, juices. . . so many options!
As wonderful as the pineapple is, please keep in mind that it is entirely possible to get too much of a good thing! Too much natural sugar and/or fiber can have adverse reactions. No need to go overboard, but you can’t go wrong adding a little pineapple into your summer nutrition!
You can definitely enjoy delicious summer treats while staying on track with your fitness and nutrition goals. Enjoy!!!
